Today was one hell of an adventure in the Big Easy! We started the adventure by going to Jackson Square to see the Cathedral and venture into the French Quarter. We stopped by a tourist information stop and he recommend a tour of the cemeteries. I had heard about them from my PT who was here before the hurricane and wanted to see them! We were told to go to the Gumbo shop for lunch, so after visiting Jackson square and the Cathedral, we went to the the Gumbo shop! Holy Moly! I have never had Gumbo before and I nearly died and went to heaven! The shop was adorable and had this most amazing mural on one of the walls. There was also a courtyard which you could eat in.
After the Gumbo, we went to the Marie Laveau's Voodoo Shop to meet up with our tour. The guide was fantastic, a New Orleans's native and a history major. So, though it was a walking tour, I thoroughly enjoyed it! We got to see the crematory, which was entirely above ground! New Orleans is a little below sea level, so if you burry your aunt underground on Sunday, it rains hard on Monday, you might see her rolling down the street on Tuesday! Anyways, he gave us a fantastic tour of the French Quarter and beyond! Side note: streets in the French Quarter are named after Saints of the Catholic Church and bastard children of royalty from France and England! Alternating streets :)
From there we went to Cafe Du Monde which is on the river side and sells famous beignets! Beignets are fabulous fried dough that is COVERED in powdered sugar!! Ahhh, its like angels dancing on your tongue! Soooo awesome! Of course, we had coffee and met up with other classmates!
From there, we check into the conference and I was able to hang out with Emily and Maggie at her brother's apartment. He lives in the Garden District of New Orelans. Here, the most amazing homes line the blocks! The architecture is amazing- a perfect mix of French, Spanish and English colonial era. From there, we headed back to the convention center and met up with all students and faculty attending the conference. It was good to see everyone and of course good to have swanky dessert! :)
The night ended at the d.b.a, which is one of the best places to catch life jazz music in NOLA. And, we got extremely luck because Walter "the wolf man" Washington was playing! He is awesome- google him if you dont know who he is :) We hung out there for a few hours and then headed back to the hotel!
A truly fabulous day with great friends in a wonderful new city! Cheers to exploring new cities!!!
