Hope

The Ascent to Craig!
This post comes a day late, but hopefully the tardiness is not detected amongst these words.  These words that have become my sense of comfort and peace on the days when its hard to see the hope that is clung to by so many at patients and families Craig Hospital.  This past week has been particularly hard emotionally.  My patients are truly getting better, slowly.  Each day is a new day- focused on what we can accomplish today.  But what if what we can accomplish today is not enough?  Enough to overcome the bleeding, swelling, and tissue death that has occurred in/to the brain.  This week, despite my best efforts, nothing felt like it was "enough".

It snowed for the first time this year on Wednesday.  We woke up to a winter wonderland and as I trudged up the hill from the parking garage to Craig Hospital, I realized how the first snow has always symbolized a fresh start to me.  A chance to cover up what was old and no longer necessary.  The beginning of a new season full of warmth despite the cold. A period of time when people find random excuses to wish someone a happy holidays. Winter's place in the order of the seasons is necessary for rebirth and recreation of life.  And thus, the new snow reminded me of the hope of what is to come.  Sometimes its easy to lose sight of hope.  Often it is a foreign concept to me- an enigma of sorts.  Similar to faith, hope is believing in what seems like the impossible.

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Well said Jyndia. And you do enough. Every little but helps these patients. Isn't it amazing how complex the brain and it's injury and healing are? Sometimes frustrating as well.
